- Federal Spending: A balanced federal budget is a priority for our national economic health and long-term prosperity. Throughout my tenure in Congress, I have fought for federal spending to provide for our national and homeland security, as directed by the U.S. Constitution, and funding increases in both of these arenas will be necessary in the future to keep our families safe and secure.
- Religious Freedom: The greatest protection of human rights in this decade has been the overthrow of the Taliban in Afghanistan and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. Religious freedom is part and parcel of any free society the U.S. stands up.
- Right to Life: I would amend the U.S. Constitution and provide blanket protection to all unborn children from the moment of conception by prohibiting any state or federal law that denies the personhood of the unborn. Likewise, I have also introduced the Right to Life Act, which would legally define "personhood" as the moment of conception and, therefore, guarantee all constitutional rights and protections, including life, to the unborn without utilizing a constitutional amendment.
U.S.-India Relations
- Hunter voted for the U.S. and India Nuclear Cooperation Act of 2006.
- Rep. Hunter has expressed concern that too many U.S. jobs are being outsourced to countries like India and China.
Notable Achievements
- After he returned from the Vietnam War he earned a college degree and opened a legal office in 1976 to give free legal advice to Hispanic immigrants. This was his first brush with public service.
- After his election to the House of Representatives, he remained active on various issues including immigration, intelligence reform, government spending, abortion, the war in Iraq and free trade. In 2002, he was appointed chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.
- Rep. Hunter also introduced the legislation calling for a border fence between the U.S. and Mexico.
